Still-Life with a Difference_2000

The paintings here are mainly my personal view towards societal ills and problems: violence, materialism, greed and over-confidence…..

“The Return of Chastity Belt”, is a metaphorical reference to the sudden and unexpected atrocities committed against the women and children around the world....

“Fever” comes in the wake of the fiasco created by the sale of soft toys at McDonald’s restaurants....

The paintings “Seven toy-arms” and “Four Rifles”, are an allusion to the promotion of violence in movies, games and toys and the dangers and consequences that they pose to our young; the broken parts representing broken limbs and arms....
“Someone’s happy, someone’s not”, takes a satirical look at the Asian economic crisis, the role of the West in the crisis and the consequences of financial indulgence....

“Dragon Seed” is about desire and it is represented by the durian which is a desirable fruit for the Asians.....

“Size 8” is the size of the koi which is symbolic to status and material possession....

“Her impression of Japanese” serves as a subtle reminder of a brutal past...

“They said 21st century belongs to Asia” is a satirical reference to the fact that complacency has led to the downfall of once mighty Asia....

“The Perfect Man” looks at goals in life and the fulfillment of basic human wants as in the 5cs – cars, cash, condominium, credit card, country club membership.
